The 15 Officer-Like Qualities
The language every assessor scores you in
Every assessor is scoring the same underlying 15 qualities (the OLQs), grouped into four factors. You don't perform them one at a time — they show up in how you behave. Knowing them tells you what 'good' actually looks like in each task.
Factor 1 — Planning & Organising
- Effective Intelligence — practical problem-solving, not bookish cleverness.
- Reasoning Ability — sound, logical thinking.
- Organising Ability — arranging resources and people to get things done.
- Power of Expression — putting your thoughts across clearly.
Factor 2 — Social Adjustment
- Social Adaptability — fitting in and working with all kinds of people.
- Cooperation — genuinely working with the group, not around it.
- Sense of Responsibility — doing what should be done without being told.
Factor 3 — Social Effectiveness
- Initiative — being the one who starts, who acts first.
- Self-Confidence — calm belief in yourself under pressure.
- Speed of Decision — deciding quickly and sensibly.
- Ability to Influence the Group — others follow because of your substance.
- Liveliness — energy and the ability to stay buoyant.
Factor 4 — Dynamic & Determination
- Determination — sticking with it when it's hard.
- Courage — physical and moral, including owning mistakes.
- Stamina — sustained effort, mental and physical.
You can't fake fifteen qualities at once. Pick the two or three that are genuinely weakest for you and work on those — the rest tend to come along.
Common mistakes to avoid
- ✗Trying to 'display' OLQs theatrically instead of just behaving well.
- ✗Over-focusing on confidence and ignoring cooperation and responsibility.
- ✗Forgetting that moral courage (owning a mistake honestly) is scored too.
